2010s weed strains that should come back with indie sleaze

2010 weed strains

Nostalgia is moving faster than ever in the social media age, and little by little, 2010 trends are entering the modern zeitgeist. Peplum tops are peeking out in influencer looks, and 2010s-style club bangers have never been more needed. In this age Instagram was new, but weed had been around for a long, long time. As these trends come back into focus, maybe the best 2010s weed strains will come with them.

The hottest strains of this time didn’t hinge on sweet flavors, though the dessert strains trend was rising in the last half of the decade. This time in cannabis culture was all about in-your-face flavor profiles. Prominent, interesting terpene combinations reigned supreme with the inaugural rise of Glues, Zkittles, Runtz, and more.

GSC

The day G*rl Sc**t C**kies (GSC) dropped cannabis culture was changed forever. This strain earns its name from smelling like a warm batch of freshly baked cookies. GSC is a cross of OG Kush and Durban Poison created sometime in 2010-2011 by Cookies co-founder Lesjai Peronnet Chang (aka Jigga).

Shortly after dropping, the strain became a dispensary staple and over the last decade, served as a parent for many excellent strains. GSC changed the game when it launched weed into the dessert realm, shaping the culture that exists today.

The Original Z, formerly known as Zk*ttl*z

This strain was named after a popular candy, but after legal action, the name was changed to the Original Z. The variety’s parentage is gray. One parent is said to be a cross of Grapefruit and Grape Ape, but the other is unknown. Terp Hogz and 3rd Gen Farms worked together, bringing The Original Z to life.

The strain earns its name with a tropical fruit-forward aroma profile. It has staying power because of its memorable hybrid effect that relaxes a person while maintaining focus. Many believe this is an advanced strain to grow, and it often has low yields, which is why it’s seen more rarely in dispensaries.

Wedding Cake

Vanilla frosting is a prominent scent in Wedding Cake, a strain that blew up in the latter half of the 2010s. Seed Junky Genetics, a southern California breeder, created the indica hybrid using Animal Mints and Triangle Kush. Smoking, dabbing, or vaping Wedding Cake may bring a sense of calm and heaviness to the body.

Original Glue

Original Glue also went under a name change from its original moniker G*rilla Gl*e until being forced to change following a lawsuit filed by the adhesive company; it’s also shortened to GG #4. This indica-dominant hybrid is potent. It gets its name from how heavy it can make someone feel as if they’re glued to the couch.

Original Glue is a cross of Sour Dubb, Chem’s Sister, and Chocolate Diesel and grows dense, chunky, sticky buds.

Tangie

Orange strains are hard to miss, and Tangie is no exception. This cannabis variety is a creative sativa that delivers a straightforward citrus flavor. DNA Genetics created Tangie, it’s a cross of California Orange and Skunk #1. Many feel euphoric, and some feel creatively inspired after consuming Tangie. Unfortunately, this one is not always available at weed shops these days.

Gelato 42

Gelato 42, or simply Gelato, is a strain that launched into popularity in 2014. Sherbinskis created Gelato by crossing Sunset Sherbet with Thin Mint GSC. The result is a mentally stimulating weed variety that also may make the body feel relaxed, almost tingly.

Much like GSC, Gelato captivated the scene the moment it dropped at dispensaries. Since then, a line of plants has grown from the Gelato family.

Khalifa Kush

Khalifa Kush was developed in 2012 for famed weed rapper Wiz Khalifa based on his preferences. It is in the OG lineage. The breeders tailored designer OGs into what Wiz likes, a heavy indica stoney strain.

The strain was initially in Wiz’s reserves but now has evolved into a full-on weed brand available in 10 states.

Miracle Alien Cookies

Miracle Alien Cookies is also known as the MAC1 strain or The MAC. California breeder Capulator created the strain from Miracle and Alien Cookies. Cap created the latter, a strain rarely seen, by accident after running a cross of Starfighter and Colombian Gold through the washing machine, hence the name Miracle.

MAC is a buzzy hybrid that may bring anxiety to some who aren’t used to lighter, sativa-dominant strains.

Runtz

Every once in a while, a strain takes the world by storm. This list covered a few, like GSC and Gelato, and now it has reached another: Runtz. Runtz is also called Runtz OG and Gelato Zkittlez, as it’s a cross of Gelato and Zkittlez. The result is a fruity delight with a euphoric high that captivated the latter half of the 2010s.

Mochi

Over the years, Gelato has grown into an army, with various phenotypes of the same parentage making their way into the weed world. Mochi is another Gelato phenotype that’s also called Gelato 47, Mochi Gelato, and Mochilato. Its dense, chunky flowers grow with purples and blues, sometimes flowers are also bright red. Mochi may feel relaxing and heavy with a bright, focused mind, which may be why Mochi has made a name for itself in the Gelato lineup.

Trends generally take 20 years to come back, right in time for trending clothes to become fresh vintage. The shoulder bag is back, it’s only a matter of time before statement necklaces are everywhere–so why not bring the Glues back with it? Now that adult-use cannabis has been legal in some states for a decade, perhaps weed will get on the trend cycle alongside fashion and design trends.
