Forget Blue Dream – this is the East Coast’s favorite weed strain

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of cannabis cultivars. From old-school landraces like Durban and Panama Red to modern classics such as GG4 and Lemon Cherry Gelato, there’s no lack of variety on the marijuana market. But like many things, tastes change dramatically depending on where you live. So what’s the most popular weed strain on the East Coast?

Hoodie Analytics crunched sales data from 14 regulated East Coast cannabis markets, spanning from Maine to Florida, focusing on eighths of flower sold in 2025. While several strains did big numbers last year, one variety stood out.

Animal Face was the top-selling weed strain on the East Coast in 2025, according to the report provided to GreenState. The award-winning cultivar was originally developed by Seed Junky Genetics. The indica-leaning strain is a cross of Animal Mints and Fire OG, with Girl Scout Cookies (GSC) and OG Kush in the family tree.

According to Hoodie, Animal Face commanded a high market share for packaged eighths. This was supported by especially strong showings in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut. Animal Face appears in the Top 10 across six of the 14 East Coast markets, more than any other strain in the report.

In second place was Khalifa Kush, while GMO took third. In New York specifically, the number one variety was Sour Diesel. In Florida, the country’s biggest medical marijuana market, Khalifa Kush was top dog.

The numbers stand in stark contrast to the West Coast cannabis capital, California, where Blue Dream was the top-selling weed strain in 2025. The Blueberry and Haze cross is also considered the most popular strain in America overall, but did not even make the top ten list for the East Coast last year, according to Hoodie’s analysis.

Cannabis markets are uniquely regional, and people’s pot preferences clearly differ from coast to coast. While Blue Dream may reign supreme in most of the U.S., this data shows that East Coast tokers are bucking trends and shaking things up.
