Woody Harrelson wants cannabis to get back to its roots
The harvest season is in full swing. Some of California’s top sungrown bud will take center stage at the upcoming Hall of Flowers in Sacramento—and there’s some serious star power behind it.
The first-ever Sungrown Showcase, presented in partnership with Budist, is designed to bring renewed attention to outdoor-grown cannabis. The showcase will occupy a dedicated footprint at the open-air event, with farmers on hand to help educate attendees about the fresh drops from harvest season.

California’s outdoor cultivators have faced mounting pressure since the launch of the state’s regulated cannabis market, grappling with falling wholesale prices, high operating costs, and competition from larger producers. Sungrown flower has also struggled to shake the perception that indoor cannabis is inherently superior, despite advocates arguing that outdoor cultivation can produce premium-quality products with a smaller energy footprint.
Actor Woody Harrelson has been a vocal proponent of sungrown flower. The star, a cofounder of the WoodsWeho dispensary and WoodsGoods cannabis, is lending his voice to the showcase to help raise awareness.
“I’ve always believed the three most important factors for good herb are sun, soil and water, which is why I find it surprising that herb grown without soil, without sun and frequently using municipal water has become so popular,” Harrelson said in a press release.

The actor noted his dispensary is dedicated to Emerald Triangle-grown herb, with several small farms represented on the menu.
“This is why I am excited that Hall of Flowers is putting Sungrown at the center of the floor this November in Sacramento,” Harrelson added. “Real farms growing herb the way it’s supposed to be grown.”
Participating sungrown brands include Briceland Forest Farm, Down OM Farm, Emerald Spirit Botanicals, Emerald Triangle Craft, Farm Cut, Garcia Hand Picked, Gold Standard, HappyDay Farms, Henry’s Original, Mendocino Natural Farms, POET, Rootimentrees, Talking Trees, Trinity Roots, Whitethorn Valley Farm, and Harrelson’s own Woods Goods.
Hall of Flowers takes place on November 4 and 5 at Cal Expo in Sacramento. The twice-yearly trade show features dozens of cannabis brands on display for retail buyers and press. For participating cultivators, the Sungrown Showcase offers a chance to challenge perceptions about outdoor cannabis and introduce their products to retailers who could help bring them to a wider audience.
And while Woody won’t be able to attend the event, he hopes his endorsement will encourage retailers to revisit the sungrown category.
