Drag icon Laganja Estranja’s new weed strain is loud, citrusy, and Pride-ready

Laganja Estranja has always been a “Sativa Diva.” Now, she’s finally got the flower to back it.

After more than a decade of “almosts,” the RuPaul’s Drag Race icon is officially launching her first seed-to-flower cannabis brand in partnership with Chicago’s SWAY Dispensary, Illinois’ first queer and Black-owned recreational shop. The debut product, Laganja: Her Bold Sativa Blend, drops May 16 exclusively at SWAY before expanding statewide through nuEra Cannabis dispensaries on June 1.

And according to Estranja, this is not your average celebrity weed collab.

“It really is all me —this is not just a celeb white-label brand,” Estranja told GreenState. “Even down to the social campaign, I’ve had my fingers in every pot. I think that’s what makes this whole thing so special: people are actually getting something coming from me. My struggles, my triumphs, and my resilience. It’s not just a product; it’s a movement by the people and for the people.”

The “sativa diva” comes full circle

The blend itself is built around limonene-heavy terpenes and anchored by Green Crack, one of Estranja’s all-time favorite strains from when she first moved to California. The flower was designed to feel bright, creative, and euphoric without tipping into anxiety territory.

“I’ve been a self-proclaimed ‘sativa diva’ ever since I was on RuPaul. That has switched for me ever since I’ve gotten older, and even more since transitioning,” Estranja said. “But, it wouldn’t feel right to launch my first brand and not have it be a sativa! I’m a classic stoner, though, and I love a good salad. You bring your weed, I’ll bring mine, and let’s mix them together and see what happens. So, I wanted something that felt ultimately balanced.”

Estranja’s signature strain salad combines citrus-forward notes with sweeter strawberry flavors, landing somewhere between energetic festival smoke and cozy creative fuel. The star joked she’s already marketing it to queer fans as “skinny weed,” thanks to limonene’s reputation for mood-boosting and appetite-suppressing effects.

“But jokes aside, I don’t need as much sativa, and I don’t need as strong a medicine anymore,” Estranja said. “I was maybe using medicine to numb myself and the pain I felt with the incongruity of who I was to the world and myself.”

“Possibilities are endless…”

Estranja’s emotional honesty sits at the center of the launch and explains why SWAY felt like the right fit. She said previous cannabis partnerships often involved “straight white men,” while SWAY co-founders Edie Moore, Art Johnston, and Pepe Peña immediately understood the importance of building something community-first.

“Their ethos aligned perfectly with mine,” Estranja said. “Come as you are, or as you want to be. As a trans person, that was so profound to me.”

That shared vision extends beyond flower. The launch includes limited-edition merch like rolling trays, enamel pins, and tote bags, with more accessories and future product expansions already in development. Estranja hinted that an indica line and concentrates are likely next.

“This is the barebones baby steps,” she said. “The expansion possibilities are endless.”

For Laganja Estranja, that future matters because this launch represents far more than a licensing deal. SWAY gave her rare creative ownership throughout the process, from cultivation and terpene selection to campaign visuals and branding.

“I’m a Capricorn, so I know I’m intense and very detail-oriented,” Estranja said. “I got to be so involved in the packaging, the website, the visuals, the campaigns. I directed, choreographed, and edited. Some of it I even filmed myself. I’ve had to teach myself how to become a director, a choreographer, a survivor.”

After years of stalled cannabis ventures, seeing Her Bold Sativa Blend hit shelves feels surreal.

“It feels like everything is aligning. The hard work and all of the seeds I’ve planted are finally growing, and I’m so excited,” Estranja concluded.
