When Compound Genetics debuted new strains from its Mellowz collection at Mary Jane Berlin this June, the German audience was ready. A cross of Spritzer and Grape Gasoline, Mellowz is available through Germany’s medical cannabis program via Compound’s partnership with Four 20 Pharma.

At Spannabis 2025 in Barcelona, Spain, volume two of Compound’s Grape Gasoline crosses included Mellowz—which arrived on the scene in a pre-pandemic world circa 2019—and was well received. The new class of Mellowz crosses that dropped at Mary Jane retains the dark purple hue of Mellowz flowers and takes the original collaboration between California-based Compound Genetics and Colorado-based Cannarado in a few different flavor directions.

“People definitely know Mellowz,” says Compound marketing coordinator Ruby Wagner. “There was an unprecedented amount of keepers that I’ve seen from the Mellowz. I can’t really think of many strains that I’ve seen as many keepers out there.”

When cannabis grows from seeds, each seed can express different physical characteristics; these are known as phenotypes, and cannabis breeders frequently identify them by number.

Wagner explains that Mellowz #8 was a beloved phenotype that has been dropped in markets worldwide, and that Mellowz #7 is a washer included in Kayla Extracts’ concentrate lineup.

Doubling down on fruit

Compound is constantly working to develop new strains. Some favorites stay in development for years as Compound Genetics experiments with ways to remix its classics into new flavors.

The new Mellowz crosses preserve the strain’s dark, sweet cherry and grape tastes and aromas and add additional fragrance and flavor notes. A Glue Lotus, a cross of Mellowz and GG4, is all fuel and fruit, with the GG4 bringing a gassy element to the pairing. Lemon Chain, Lemon Gello x Mellowz, pulls in a bright citrus smell, resulting in an extremely inviting, fruit-forward smoke. Mailbox Money, Glitterbomb x Mellowz, doubles down on the fruity grape aromas and is the prettiest of the new releases. Its tight buds are dark purple and completely frosted over with trichomes. It tastes like a sweet red table grape expressed in smoke.

“I will say the Glitterbomb by Mellowz moved a lot,” Wagener says of the sales at Mary Jane. “I think we’ll be seeing a lot of Mailbox Money out there in the future.”

The demand for new types of cannabis is high, especially as cannabis genetics spread further across the globe. Wagner says “more throwback gear” is in the works for Compound Genetics as it continues to reboot its successful strains from the past.
