The California State Fair is home to the country’s only state-sanctioned weed competition. The contest honors both flower and a variety of finished goods like vapes, pre-rolls, and edibles. Today, organizers announced the winners of 150 gold, silver, and bronze medals in the 2025 Awards. The list includes a diverse mix of legacy craft farmers, multi-state brands, and newcomers alike.

The California State Fair made headlines in 2021 when it added the groundbreaking cannabis component to its prestigious cheese, olive oil, and agricultural goods competitions. This year’s cannabis competition was the biggest yet, with over 600 entries.

The California Cannabis Awards utilize a two-tiered judging process. All flower is tested by SC Lab to determine terpene and cannabinoid content. The entries, along with finished goods, are then distributed to Budist critics who use the platform’s 100-point scale to assess the aroma, flavor, appearance, and effects.

The awards arrive at a pivotal moment for the California cannabis market. Over-regulation, lack of access for consumers, and a looming tax hike have led many operators to fold. For the winners of this year’s awards, the recognition helps shine a light on the craft cannabis community. It also introduces a new audience to their products via on-site sales at the State Fair courtesy of California retailer Embarc.

“At a time when the industry is struggling, it’s incredible to take space to uplift and celebrate some of the best cannabis California has to offer,” said James Leitz, co-producer of the Awards and California Cannabis Experience. “These winners affirm what we know: California is the beating heart of craft cannabis, and it is our hope that this victory serves as a credible distinction with California consumers to amplify these brands.”

Justin Lee from Ay Papi, whose brand was awarded multiple medals for its hash, edibles, and vapes, said his company is “carrying over a legacy.”

“We are on a mission to champion small craft farmers by showcasing their cultivars with unique sensory experiential products that inspire,” Lee wrote in a statement sent to GreenState. “We’re incredibly grateful to see this team’s dedication and passion recognized.”
