This innovative bong surprised me, a level 20 smoker

phoenix star bong review

Bongs have been a popular way to consume cannabis for decades. But while they provide potent hits, a big bong rip can be a tad harsh. Some people will put ice cubes in the bong to cool the smoke. But Phoenix Star will do you one better: you can freeze the tube itself.

The product promises cool, smooth smoke and an elevated sesh experience. As a long-time bong user, I decided to see for myself. This Phoenix Bong review focuses on the Phoenix Star freezable glycerin bong with four showerhead percs, but there are many options to choose from. The TLDR? This bong definitely surprised me, in more ways than one.

What Is a Phoenix Star Glycerin Oil Freezable Coil Bong?

A freezable coil bong is pretty similar to a regular water bong, at least in terms of how it functions. They feature a compartment at the bottom where you put water in and smoke collects, a relatively long neck or stem, and a mouthpiece at the top where you pull smoke through.

However, they also have one very special component, which is a glass coil that is filled with glycerin. Glycerin is a natural compound that is derived from animal fats or vegetable oils. This compound freezes, but will not expand and damage the glass. Thus, you get a bong tube that will cool your vapor without the need for ice cubes.

How to Use a Phoenix Star Bong with Freezable Coil

Using Phoenix Star bongs is very easy. I placed my tube in the freezer the day before. Other reviews suggest you don’t need that much time, but I wanted to ensure it was good and frozen. In the meantime, fill the base with water just past the percolators.

After the tube has been in the freezer for at least a couple of hours, you then put it back on the base and secure the pieces with the included plastic clip. Be sure to attach the clip, or you may find yourself grabbing the tube and accidentally breaking something.

Once you’re set, use it like any other water bong. Just fill it with some water to the appropriate level, insert your favorite ground cannabis into the bowl, light it up, and take a hit. The defining feature here is the glycerin coil that gets freezing cold—but how does it affect the smoke?

Phoenix Star Bong Review

Out of the box, my first impression is that this bong is beautiful. The blue accents are gorgeous. It’s not too big and not too small, and the tube and percs are magnificent.

I will say that the freezable tube is a neat concept, but not without some challenges. When it came out of the freezer, it developed condensation and became slippery rather quickly. That made handling it mildly risky. It was also a bit hard to put on the plastic clip. I’d advise always holding this from the bottom, below the downstem.

Taking a rip, I couldn’t tell if the tube was indeed cooling the smoke. Having said that, the percs definitely helped filter. Either way, it was smooth sailing.

I think, regardless of the freezable component, I like the Phoenix Star bong. It’s aesthetic fits right into my collection, and the quad-perc power definitely seemed to take the experience to the next level. I would like to compare this to other freezable bongs and the Chill Pipe to see which, if any, performs best.

Final thoughts

Sometimes, a product isn’t exactly what you expect—but that can be a good thing. While the freezeable Phoenix Star bong didn’t necessarily make my smoke ice cold, it definitely filtered it and looked good doing it. For $148, I’d say this water pipe is worth the purchase. It may not be the original advertised function that sold me, but I was sold nonetheless.
