Dairy Queen baker accidentally confuses ‘Moana’ for ‘marijuana’ in birthday cake mishap

Marijuana, Moana. Potato, po-tah-to.

It’s a classic mix-up that occurred when Milledgeville, Georgia resident Kensli Taylor Davis asked for a cake themed after the 2016 Disney movie for her 25th birthday.

Upon opening the box, she probably expected to be greeted by the smiling face of the princess of Motunui, or maybe even lyrics from “How Far I’ll Go.” Instead, a bright green marijuana leaf embellished her celebratory treat.

And, rather than a photo of Moana’s tattooed sidekick Maui, a stoned “My Little Pony” character complete with a cannabis symbol stamped onto its rump adorned the cake. “Happy 25th Birthday, Kensli!” it read. The masterpiece was surrounded by a fluffy border of white and green icing.

“I haven’t had a chance to tell y’all about our experience this weekend with my birthday cake,” Davis wrote in a Facebook post about the incident earlier this month. It has since gone viral with over 14,000 shares. “So my mama called and ordered me a cake telling them how much I loved Moana. (Because really I do) Well needless to say these people thought she said marijuana ??? That ice cream cake was still good though.”

I’ve never had anyone tell me I couldn’t make this kind of cake.

Many praised her positive attitude, lauding a marijuana cake as “more appropriate” for a 25-year-old anyway. Dairy Queen didn’t seem to be too upset about it, either.

BAKED: How to make a cannabis birthday cake

“This was a simple misunderstanding from the beginning,” the fast food chain wrote in an official statement. “Our cake decorator designed a cake based on what she thought she heard the customer order. When the customer picked it up and said it was not what she ordered, we immediately apologized for the error and offered to redesign it the way she originally intended. The customer said it was fine, paid for the cake and left.”

But the baker, Cassandra Walker, lost her job over the incident. She told local news station WMAZ that once she boxed up the cannabis cake, she excitedly scurried over to her customer, excited to see her reaction.

Davis explained it wasn’t what she had ordered, but thought the misunderstanding was hilarious. Walker’s employer did not.

“I’ve never had anyone tell me I couldn’t make this kind of cake,” Walker said.”It was a mistake — it was a cake! I thought they would have said, ‘It’s a learning lesson and we’ll keep you.’ No, just a boot out the door,” said Walker.

The mishap was a result of something like an inevitably misconstrued game of Telephone.

CBD COFEE: Just because Willie Nelson makes it, does that mean we should drink it?

Walker told WMAZ another employee took the call and asked her to make a marijuana-themed cake. She questioned whether that was right, but did what she was told to do.

“The manager stood behind me while I pulled the images off the internet,” Walker said to USA Today. “She walked by as I decorated the cake. As I boxed the cake up, she was the one who walked it up to the front.”

Dairy Queen eventually offered her job back, but Walker turned them down because it ‘took them too long to do the right thing.’

It’s unclear what she’s up to next, but we’re in full support of Walker running her own marijuana cake business.
