There are a select few stoner icons who transcend time and space. Among them are Cheech and Chong, Harold and Kumar, and even Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. One group of cannabis characters that continues to delight plant enthusiasts around the world is The Freak Brothers

Initially created by Gilbert Shelton in the 1960s as a comic book series titled The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, the siblings have been a part of cannabis culture for decades. The trio got their own animated sitcom in 2021, airing on Tubi. Naturally, a cannabis brand soon followed via a partnership with Cookies.

To commemorate Shelton’s 85th birthday, The Freak Brothers are holding an epic multimedia event dubbed Doobie Day. Taking place Saturday, May 31 at 3:30 pm PST, attendees can expect tons of dynamic content and surprises. The online event will begin with a panel conversation with Gavin Shelton (Gilbert’s nephew and Freak Brothers historian), producer Greg Goldner, and London Van Der Kamp of Cookies.

The celebration will also feature exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and tributes, including unreleased content with the show’s producers and stars, such as Tiffany Haddish, Blake Anderson, and Adam Devine. And even with all the star power and modern twists the show takes, the characters remain authentic through their political satire and counterculture representation.

“Gilbert Shelton’s creations have entertained and inspired millions of readers around the world for over half a century and remain as funny and relevant as when they were created,” said Gavin Shelton.

Smoke like a ‘Freak’

In an effort to keep the vibes high during Doobie Day, The Freak Brothers brand is releasing a limited edition line of pre-rolls just in time for the event. Adults 21 and over who RSVP can get a buy one, get one free deal to “smoke like a freak.” The joints are available at Cookies stores in California or online, wherever THCA flower is permitted.

Goldner, who also serves as head of brand and strategy for The Freak Brothers’ brand, told GreenState the Doobie Day release is exactly what the characters are all about.

“Gilbert Shelton didn’t just draw comics—he drew the blueprint for stoner counterculture,” he said. “On his 85th birthday, we’re dropping ‘The Doobie’ and sparking up with fans around the world to honor the OG who made it cool to live outside the norm, laugh loud, and get high while doing it.”

Actor Woody Harrelson, who plays Freewheelin’ Franklin Freek on the show, told GreenState you don’t need weed to enjoy The Freak Brothers, but it may be the icing on the cake.

“This show is really funny, it’s pure entertainment. If you’re a stoner, it’s probably a little funnier, but either way, it’s a great ride.”

A limited number of RSVPs are still open, and organizers are encouraging fans to sign up early. Every attendee will also be eligible to win art signed by Gilbert Shelton himself. For those who are unable to join but still want to get in the groove, The Freak Brothers doobies are available while supplies last.
