Your weekend guide to cannabis culture | from the desk of cannabis editor David Downs

Good afternoon!

Weekend playlist is supposed to an upbeat weekly post, but today our hearts are broken. Ashes continue to rain down on San Francisco as wildfire scorches the North Bay Area and beyond. The state’s largest cannabis harvest in its history has ended in tragedy.

This morning I went out to my lone cannabis plant on the back porch to collect seeds. They’re ripening one at a time, and you can tell when their little seed pod turns brown that they’re ready to fall out. Just the slightest squeeze makes them pop out — I’ve collected about a dozen of these little, brown, tiger-striped seeds and hundreds more are finishing up.

It’s a reminder that a new season will come. This, too, shall pass. Already we’re tracking relief efforts beginning to coalesce. The cannabis community has spent decades relying on itself in the face of a full-scale federal-state drug war. Coming together to help each other is in the community’s DNA. Though the fires are still burning and more damage and loss of life and crop is still to come, this community will rebuild. It will come back as strong and vibrant as ever. The seeds are already in-hand. The time will come to plant again. — David Downs
